This information should help you understand what to expect when you get legal advice from us.
Legal Aid Queensland can help with advice about most personal legal problems including:
- If you are charged with a criminal offence.
- If you need to sort out issues about children or money with your former partner.
- Civil law problems especially those issues which have a big impact on your life such as:
- housing
- debt and consumer issues
- welfare benefits
- employment
- access to community services including health and education.
When we give you legal advice a lawyer will talk with you about your problem and advise you of the options you have.
The lawyer will talk to you about whether you are eligible for a grant of legal aid for representation in your case.
If you are not going to apply for a grant of legal aid, the lawyer will talk to you about what to do next about your legal problem.
Sometimes it is better for you to get advice from a private solicitor or from another service that specialises in the type of problem you have. Some problems are too complex for our legal advice service because the time our lawyers can spend with you is limited. In that case our information service will provide you with options for getting advice.
