What is abortion?

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy.

Can I have an abortion in Queensland?

Different laws apply in each state of Australia.

Abortion is permitted in Queensland where the continuation of the pregnancy poses a serious risk to a woman's physical or mental health.

Can anyone force or prevent me having an abortion?

It is not possible to force a person to have an abortion and it is usually not possible to prevent a person from having an abortion.

What if a child or adult who does not have the capacity to make a decision needs an abortion?

Medical treatment, including abortion, that may permanently affect the health of a child is a 'special medical procedure'. The family court has specific powers about special medical procedures for children.

The Guardianship and Administration Tribunal has specific powers about special health care procedures for adults who lack the capacity to make decisions. These are donation of tissue, sterilisation, and termination of pregnancy.
