What is the Small Claims Tribunal?

On this page:

The Small Claims Tribunal can deal with disputes about goods or services valued at $7500 or less.

The Small Claims Tribunal provides a low-cost way to make a small claim. Lawyers are not allowed in the tribunal unless both sides agree. You will usually have to prepare your own case and pay a fee to lodge your claim. The fee depends on the amount of your claim.

Where is the tribunal located?

In Brisbane, the Small Claims Tribunal is located within the magistrates court at 363 George Street.

Outside Brisbane, the Small Claims Tribunal operates from your nearest magistrates court and can be contacted through the court.

What is the difference between a small claim and a claim for a minor debt?

A claim for a minor debt is when you take action against someone who owes you money up to $7500 (eg an IOU, a dishonoured cheque or wages). A minor debt claim must be started in the magistrates court and not in the Small Claims Tribunal.

If you have a minor debt we have another guide to help you. Call 1300 65 11 88 or visit our website www.legalaid.qld.gov.auThis link will open a new window to get a free copy.
