Regional Solicitor Program

Do you want to do interesting work and get great experience? Do you want to earn a good income and still have time to enjoy life? Do you want a job that’s going to set your career on the path to success? Legal Aid Queensland’s Regional Solicitor Program offers all these benefits, but more importantly, you’ll get the chance to make a difference to a regional community while experiencing your own adventure.

An excellent opportunity to launch your legal career with plenty of responsibility and challenges, diverse work experience,
an amazing lifestyle and a decent salary …
there’s nothing quite like it!

If there’s one word that sums up our Regional Solicitor Program it would be “experience”. Program participants are placed with a private regional law firm for two years, spending about 75 percent of their time doing legal aid work.

Eligibility

The Regional Solicitor Program is open to newly admitted solicitors with minimum experience and to law graduates who are enrolled in or about to start a Practical Legal Training course that satisfies the requirements for admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland.

You can apply during any of these stages, but you can only start working under the Regional Solicitor Program once you have been admitted to practice.

Salary

Your salary is very competitive starting at $50,000 (from 1 July 2009).

Legal Aid Queensland will also reimburse you for your Practical Legal Training course fees when you start your contract.

Training

As you focus on handling your firm’s legal aid cases, you’ll receive guidance and support from your placement firm coupled with training and development opportunities provided by Legal Aid Queensland.

You will be invited to attend weekly continuing legal education sessions and other training workshops that may be relevant to your career path. You will also have access to Legal Aid Queensland’s information databases, internet resources and cutting edge library resources.

We also encourage and support participants to qualify as a duty lawyer.

Our goal is to have young solicitors in regional areas who will be able to confidently carry a caseload and have the advocacy skills to speak for clients in court.
