What are your rights while in care?
You have the right to:
- Live in a place that best meets your needs and respects your cultural background
- Take part in making important decisions affecting your life like where you live, contact with your family, school and health
- Have contact with your family and community
- Access job training and get help finding a job
- Access the help that you need like dental care, medical treatment or counselling services
- Access school or education that is right for you
- Have what is happening to you regularly reviewed to check how it is going (if you are being cared for by the department until you are 18 years old)
- Be given information about the decisions and plans made about your life
- Be involved in planning the kind of support and assistance you may need after leaving care like where you will live, help from Centrelink, job training and education
- Be given information that is being kept about you
- Privacy
- Live in a safe and stable place
