Cybersecurity update

Queensland Government agencies, including Legal Aid Queensland, have recently seen an increase in cybersecurity incidents using QR codes in phishing campaigns.

Hackers have been sending emails with QR codes, calendar invites and attachments, and scanning the QR code redirects you to a fraudulent login page designed to look like an organisation’s legitimate site.

A variety of subject lines have been used, often related to accounts payable or payroll.

Important security reminders

We ask all preferred suppliers to remain alert and vigilant following this increase in cybersecurity incidents.

  • Think before you click. Legal Aid Queensland will not email you asking you to make a payment. If you receive an email like this, don’t follow the process and make contact with LAQ to verify its authenticity.
  • Pause and check carefully before opening links or attachments.
  • Hover over links to confirm the true web address before clicking.
  • Never scan QR codes in emails, attachments or public spaces.
  • Check the sender’s domain (this is the @example.com part of the email address) to ensure the email is coming from a trusted source.

Please report any suspicious emails from Legal Aid Queensland immediately to our IT team at it.servicedesk@legalaid.qld.gov.au or 07 3917 0003.

Good cybersecurity starts with awareness and helps us all stay protected. Thank you for your cooperation.
