Legal Aid Queensland is committed to protecting the privacy of personal information of people who interact with us. LAQ’s Privacy policy sets out our privacy obligations and how Legal Aid Queensland meets these obligations.

The Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act) regulates how public sector agencies, including Legal Aid Queensland, manage personal information. The Queensland Privacy Principles in the IP Act:

  • regulate how agencies collect, secure, use and disclose personal information
  • allow individuals to access their personal information held by government agencies
  • allow individuals to request corrections to their personal information.

What is personal information?

Personal information is defined in the IP Act as:

“Personal information” means information or an opinion about an identified individual or an individual who is reasonably identifiable from the information or opinion –

  1. whether the information or opinion is true or not; and
  2. whether the information or opinion is recorded in material form or not
