To learn more or to get started, speak to the Office of the Commissioner Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa.

The nature of your cultural gifting is private and confidential.

The Commissioners office will guide you through the process and can refer you for legal advice and counselling services.

The process can take a while so you might need to be patient.

There are two types of applications:

  • Application for a child
  • Application for an adult

If approved, the commissioner writes to everyone involved, giving reasons for the decision and issuing the cultural recognition order.

The Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages transfers the parentage from the birth parents to the cultural parents.

You will then receive a new birth certificate.
